St. Paul plans pigeon population control

St. Paul officials are working up a plan to use bird birth control on the downtown's pigeon population.

Last weekend, a chunk of facade fell off a downtown St. Paul parking ramp and landed near the front door of a restaurant. No one was hurt. Built-up pigeon droppings are the suspected culprit.

St. Paul is looking at feeding local flocks OvoControl, a feed laced with birth control that prevents pigeon eggs from being fertilized. Officials hope that would result in fewer eggs hatching and shrink the pigeon population.

Bob Kessler heads St. Paul's Department of Safety and Inspections. Kessler pitched the birth-control idea to building managers during a "pigeon summit" at the end of April. He'll present a final proposal next week.
