St. Paul's first female district fire chief gets badge today

St. Paul's first female district fire chief will receive her badge at a pinning ceremony this morning.

Fire Chief Tim Butler will present the new badge to Fawn Hawkinson, a 16-year veteran of the department who most recently served as captain. For seven years, she also served as a paramedic fire captain.

Butler will also present new badges to Jim Smith, named assistant fire chief; Matt Simpson, named deputy chief of Emergency Medical Services; Dennis Appleton, named deputy fire chief; Dino Guerin, named district fire chief.

"I am proud to have these five members of the Fire Department join me at their new leadership positions," Chief Butler said in a statement. "They bring a wealth of institutional knowledge and professional expertise that will assist me representing the department and guiding it as it responds to the changing needs of our residents."

The badge ceremony begins today at 10 a.m., at Fire Station 8, 65 E. 10th Street.
