Historic bridge to move 200 miles to Twin Cities

An 132-year-old bridge that spans the Little Fork River in northern Minnesota's Koochiching County will be moved more than 200 miles to a trail near the Twin Cities.

The historic bridge will become an overpass at Manning Avenue near Grant in Washington County by next year.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation owns the bridge, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. But it needed replacing.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources looked for a way to reuse the bridge while Washington County looked for a safe way to get Gateway State Trail users across a busy road.

Moving the old bridge will cost an estimated $2.8 million, but the county will only pay $100,000 of the bill.
