Roseau to begin work on $30 million flood control project
The city of Roseau will break ground today for a $30 million flood diversion channel.
A 2002 flood caused more than $100 million in damage in Roseau, prompting plans for a flood prevention project.
Mayor Jeff Pelowski says long-term flood protection will bring peace of mind and economic stability.
"Economic development is challenging enough in a small town, but when you're dealing with high water events and sandbagging efforts every other year it makes things that much more difficult to ask for that long term investment in your community."
Pelowski says the project, which will include several miles of bike, pedestrian and ATV trails, should be completed in about two years.
The federal government is paying for about 60 percent of the project, which will be overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers.
