St. Louis County seeking buyer for old jail

St. Louis County officials are making one last effort to sell the historic but dilapidated former county jail in downtown Duluth.

The building was condemned for prisoner use in 1996. Since then, the county has shown it to more than 60 parties but has received no legitimate offers to buy it.

The County Board voted to demolish it this year, but last month the Duluth City Council intervened, citing historic building statutes.

County property management director Tony Mancuso says that as of Thursday, he'd received 11 requests for information about the building. The county is looking for a developer who can rehabilitate it for a legitimate use.

All offers are due by Aug. 14.
