MnDOT to begin survey of Winona Bridge
The Minnesota Department of Transportation will conduct an archeological and historic study of the land surrounding the Winona Bridge.
The Highway 43 bridge that crosses the Mississippi is scheduled to be replaced in 2014, and the survey work is part of the replacement process. MnDOT's Kristine Hernandez says Native American artifacts are one type of historic material they will look for.
"They'll look at the historical nature of even the buildings in the area," she said. "They'll look at the potential to find artifacts. So they actually do bring out shovels and turn dirt."
Finding relics could impact where and how the new bridge is built. The dig starts this week and will continue through the end of summer.
