St. Jude Medical opens new headquarters

St. Jude Medical says its new corporate headquarters in Little Canada will be at the heart of its efforts to cure a condition that afflicts three million Americans. The company held a grand opening Monday for the 180,000 square-foot building.

The malady is called Atrial fibrillation. The upper chambers of the heart quiver rather than beat normally, which can lead to strokes.

St. Jude is developing specialty devices used in a medical procedure that can cure the disease. St. Jude CEO Dan Starks said that approach is much less expensive than the drug therapy now commonly used.

"We've been collaborating with clinical researchers and with appropriate regulatory authorities to continue to advance what we know about the disease state and how we can help cure the disease." St. Jude employs about 2,300 people in Minnesota and 14,000 worldwide.
