Picnic marks 75th anniversary of historic truckers strike
Union leaders and descendants of organizers will speak at a picnic in Minneapolis on Sunday to mark the 75th anniversary of the historic 1934 Minneapolis Truckers Strike.
It was one of the biggest strikes of the 1930s. On July 20, 1934, 60 strikers were shot by police and two were killed. But the truckers later won recognition of their union and improved wages and conditions.
The speakers will include David Sundeen and Linda Leighton, grandson and granddaughter of V.R. Dunne, a central leader of the strike.
They'll also include Tom Dooher, president of the teachers union Education Minnesota, who's a grandson of union leader Pat Corcoran, who was killed in the strike.
The picnic runs from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Wabun Picnic Area of Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis.
