Veteran state legislator announces retirement

A veteran state legislator has announced today Friday that he plans to retire this year.

DFL Sen. Steve Murphy, 52, of Red Wing, says he won't run for 6th term in November. Murphy is chairman of the Senate transportation committee and played a key role in recent road and bridge initiatives, as well as tougher seat belt laws. He won his first election in 1992.

Murphy says he wants to spend more time with his family.

"It's been a great opportunity, and I really appreciate the folks that sent me to office," Murphy said. "It's been a great learning experience, and I've grown tremendously. I'll never be able to repay those those constituents that sent me to the Capitol."

Murphy says he was not concerned about the possibility of a tough re-election fight this year. Red Wing Mayor John Howe recently filed to run in Senate district 28 as a Republican candidate.
