Boy, 6, drowns in Golden Valley

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the drowning of a 6-year-old boy.

A passerby saw the child at the bottom of Wirth Lake in Golden Valley's Theodore Wirth Park around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. He was near shore in about 4 feet of water.

Lifeguards pulled the child to shore and began CPR. He was taken to North Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office has not released the boy's name. Officials say the child was a Golden Valley resident in the park with his family for a birthday party.

The boy is the sixth person to drown in the county in 2012.
