First-time Twin Cities home buyers could find they're eligible for thousands of dollars in grants.

The Neighborhood-LIFT program offers prospective home buyers the chance to apply for $15,000 in down payment assistance grants and meet individually with housing counselors.

The two-day event will be Sept. 7-8 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, and is sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, the Wells Fargo Foundation and NeighborWorks America, an independent nonprofit organization with branches in Minnesota.

Wells Fargo's Dave Kvamme said the program hopes to help at least 400 potential homeowners buy homes in the Twin Cities.

"We'd like to help move more homes in both Minneapolis and St. Paul and stabilize neighborhoods and bring new neighbors into the neighborhoods," he said.

He said down payment assistance grants can be applied to mortgages from any lending institution, including Wells Fargo.

The event is free. Walk-ins are welcome but pre-registration is suggested. Free parking and shuttle bus service to the convention center is also available. More information can be found on the website.
