MN woman loses song sharing appeal

A Brainerd woman accused of sharing music over the Internet says she'll ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review her case.

A federal judge had ordered Jammie Thomas-Rasset to pay the record companies $54,000 in the case. But an appeals court said she owes even more -- $222,000.

Thomas-Rasset said she can't afford to pay, but she said requesting further review in the case isn't about the money.

"Where I'm at in my life there's just no way I can afford to pay $24,000 or $54,000 or $222,000, it's just not possible at this time," Thomas-Rasset said. "But it was that precedent that I just couldn't agree to because then they can turn around and just continue suing all those other people."

Thomas-Rasset said it isn't fair for people like her to have to pay thousands of dollars in damages for a song that costs a dollar or less online.

A spokeswoman for the recording industry welcomed the appeals court's ruling and says the industry looks forward to putting the case to rest.
