SUV driver suspected of alcohol use in crash killing two motorcyclists

Two people were killed over the weekend when the motorcycle they were riding struck an SUV driven by a suspected drunk driver.

The accident happened just before dark Sunday evening in East Bethel. The victims are a man, 48, from St. Francis and a woman, 46, from Big Lake.

The two motorcycle passengers were dead at the scene of the collision, said Anoka County Sheriff Commander Paul Sommer. The exact circumstances of the crash are under investigation, but Sommer said the motorcycle had been traveling west down Viking Boulevard when it hit an SUV near Rendova Street.

The driver of the SUV, a 42-year-old Bethel woman, could face formal charges as soon as Tuesday.

"Their subsequent investigation showed that the driver of the other vehicle, which was a sport utility vehicle, was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, and she was placed under arrest for criminal vehicular homicide," Sommer said.
