Minneapolis single-sort-recycling begins

Single-sort recycling begins in parts of Minneapolis on Monday.

Under the new system, residents can combine all their recyclable refuse in one container without separating paper, plastic, glass and other items.

The city is dispensing 30,000 large, blue plastic carts in neighborhoods scattered throughout the city chosen to start the new system. Each cart will contain a picture of acceptable items on the underside of the lid.

City officials say single-sort recycling is easier and more efficient, and encourages more people to participate in the program. By next summer, about 100,000 households will be taking part

As with the current system, yard waste is not allowed in recycling carts. The city says its blue carts will each come with a photograph in the lid that shows what types of materials can be recycled.
