At least three people died Friday in a fiery head-on collision between a school bus and a car in Inver Grove Heights, police said.

The crash destroyed the car and ripped apart the front of the school bus. The bus carried no passengers, nor was the bus driver injured, according to a statement from Inver Grove Heights police.

Both vehicles were on fire when police said they arrived at the crash site on a short residential street, off Hwy 55, shortly before 4 p.m.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash, police said. The Minnesota State Patrol is reconstructing the scene.

Nearby resident Brad Johnson he had never seen anything like it in his neighborhood.

"I live by a lot of children so it was very alarming," Johnson said. "What was important is when I came up to see the tragedy, I saw children safely walking home."
