Broken lines leave 650 people without phone service

A break in a fiber optic line west of Duluth has left about 650 people without telephone and emergency 911 service.

Some cell phone service has also been affected in the communities of Floodwood, Cromwell, Meadowlands, Alborn and Toivola.

In the event of an emergency people should go to their local fire departments, said Marcus Bruning, supervising deputy sheriff for St Louis County.

"And what we've done is paged out those firefighters to man those stations and halls so if there is an emergency they'd be able to get help and notify services to get additional resources there if needed," Bruning said.

It is unclear what damaged the fiber line. Bruning expects repairs to be completed by 6 p.m. Tuesday.
