Police issue gun safety reminder after child's death
In the wake of the accidental shooting death of a 2-year-old boy Wednesday, Minneapolis police are reminding gun owners to keep their firearms away from small children.
Police say the boy's 4-year-old brother accidently fired the fatal shot at the boys' south Minneapolis home. Sgt. Stephen McCarty said gun owners, especially those with children, should keep their firearms locked up and unloaded, with the ammunition stored in a separate location.
"We can own and possess guns legally, but we have to be safe and extremely careful with them, otherwise we see the tragic results as what happened yesterday afternoon," McCarty said.
He said the child's parents could face criminal charges for negligence. However, a spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney's offices said so far, the office has not received a case for charges from police.
