Girl shot mistakenly thought to be intruder

A 16-year-old Rochester girl who was allegedly shot by her grandfather remains in critical condition at St. Marys Hospital.

The 61-year-old man had mistaken his granddaughter for an intruder, according to Rochester police, who said he and his wife were asleep when they awoke to a noise outside around 11 p.m. Monday. The couple believed their granddaughter was inside the house at the time, police said.

The man took a 9 mm pistol, left the bedroom to investigate and then shot at an individual near the back patio door, said Rochester Police spokesman Brian Winters.

"He felt as if there was an intruder outside that was an intruder entering his residence, or preparing to enter his residence, and he shot two times," Winters said.

The girl was hit once in the upper torso. Officials say the girl is expected to survive the injury. She had been living with her grandparents for a few weeks.
