2013 grant-making up with better economy?

The Minnesota Council on Foundations says the annual survey of its members shows there will likely be a modest increase in grant-making in the coming year.

President Bill King says the increase will likely be about 2 percent. He says foundations indicate they may shift their focus to more educational programs.

"I think as the economy recovers, that shift will probably result in a slight downturn in social service areas of giving as more and more families seem to be getting more stable and the urgency of the economic impact is a little lessoned," King said. "Collectively, I think what we're hearing back from some of the grant makers is their interest in working more in partnership across these various issues to see if they can have a bigger impact than they're currently getting out on some of the issues."
