Metro PFLAG event focuses on gay athletes

A Twin Cities group that advocates for gay and lesbian students held its annual conference at Hamline University on Friday.

The Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) conference focused on bullying, especially bullying of gay students involved in sports.

"We really feel like this is kind of an area that has not been addressed yet," said Carol Curoe, president of the Twin Cities PFLAG group. "Gay or lesbian, bisexual or transgender student in sports ... they're at great risk for harassment and bullying."

The conference featured panel discussions on the challenges that gay student athletes face, and informational sessions for coaches, teachers and school administrators.

"If we can build awareness, No. 1 that there is a lot of homophobia around sports," Curoe said, "we want to give them the language, the tools, so that they can talk about it. And if someone, a friend or a student, comes out to them ... they know how to respond to it in a way that is helpful."

An awards ceremony at the conference was set for Friday night.
