Tenn. shipping firm plans for 500 Minn. jobs

The Twin-Cities branch of a shipping company says it plans to add 500 new jobs over the next five years.

Steve Cox, the executive vice president of Access America Transport's Brooklyn Park office, said the company provides freight service to manufacturers. He said despite the overall sluggish national economy, the company has been able to grow on the strength of its customer service.

"Over the past two years, we've added just over 100 people," Cox said. "In 2011 we had a job gain of about 35 people. In 2012, last year, we had a job gain of about 75. And this year we predict we'll probably be in the 80s range."

Access America Transport was started in Chattanooga, Tenn. just more than 10 years ago. Cox said he started his branch office with one other person in 2006. Last year the company announced expansions in Tennessee, Colorado and Texas.
