MPCA probes tribe's waste recovery effort
Minnesota regulators are investigating how the Red Cliff Band of Ojibwe handled barrels of Cold War military waste that it recovered last summer from Lake Superior.
The Duluth News Tribune reports the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has an open investigation under way into how the barrels were brought to shore in Minnesota and transported through the state without proper permits or advance notification.
John Elling, director of the MPCA's hazardous waste division, says he can't comment on details of the investigation because it's still under way.
The MPCA has struggled to get information on the Wisconsin tribe's recovery effort and on what the barrels contain.
Last week, the Red Cliff Band said some of the barrels contained active explosives, but that there was no immediate human or environmental threat.
