Police ID St. Louis man shot by officers

St. Paul police have identified the man who was fatally shot by officers Tuesday after he stabbed a police dog.

Alden Anderson, 32, of St. Louis was being sought by law enforcement on suspicion of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Officers from St Paul, the North Star Fugitive Task Force, the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, and US Marshals were aiding in the search. A police K-9 named Kody found Anderson in the basement of a Summit-University home, and Anderson stabbed the dog to death.

St. Paul police spokesman Paul Paulos said Officer Jeffrey Thissen fired his weapon and has been placed on standard administrative leave. Two US Marshals also fired their weapons. A spokesperson for the Marshals Service said it does not identify officers.

Paulos said there are no plans to publicly memorialize K-9 officer Kody.

"We do let the handlers do their own thing; we consider the dogs one of their family members, so it is a private matter," Paulos said.

The last time a St. Paul police dog was killed was 1998, he said.
