Sendoff for Minn. soldiers to Afghanistan

A departure ceremony will be held this weekend for a group of National Guard soldiers.

As part of Operation Enduring Freedom, 149 Minnesota soldiers are deploying to Afghanistan for a year. The Cambridge-based 850th Horizontal Engineer Company will provide heavy equipment and support for several military bases in Afghanistan.

The soldiers will also help train the Afghan military, said Guard spokesman Capt. John Hobot.

"They'll be working with heavy equipment and hauling and maintenance support for several forward operating bases throughout Afghanistan," Hobot said, "so a lot of times engineer companies will improve the bases around Afghanistan and make them better."

The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cambridge High School.
