Metro United Way: Donations rise $800K

The Greater Twin Cities United Way says its donations have risen by $800,000 from last year.

Twin Cities United Way President Sarah Caruso said the organization has raised nearly $89 million in the past year, adding that the increase is partly because of to more volunteer opportunities.

"A lot of our companies did something with speed volunteering," Caruso said. "We also had our action day at the end of August, which kicked off the campaign. Over 1,100 volunteers came together to do meaningful work for the community. So I think connecting the donor to the volunteer work, to the impact of their giving really motivates donors and lets them feel very good about their support."

Nearly 60 small and mid-size companies raised 10 percent more than they did the year before, Caruso said.
