Driver dies after collision with light rail train

MetroTransit officials say a 55-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving collided with a light rail train.

Spokesman Bruce Howard said at about 6:30 p.m. Friday a northbound Hiawatha Avenue light rail train collided with a vehicle traveling westbound on E. 26th Street in Minneapolis.

"It appears the vehicle was attempting to go either around or under the gate arm," Howard said. "The train struck the vehicle, pushed it down the tracks, and the driver of the vehicle was killed in the accident."

The unidentified man was alone in the car, Howard said.
