Minneapolis fire near Children's Hospital

By MPR News staff

MINNEAPOLIS -- Firefighters were trying to put out a blaze Thursday morning at a deli on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis that started at about 3 a.m.

The fire reportedly set off smoke alarms at Children's Hospital across the street.

At first, they forced their way into the building but were pulled out because of heavy fire the basement and the advancement of the fire, said department spokeswoman Cherie Penn. They continued to fight the fire from outside; a second alarm was called at 3:38 a.m. for additional firefighters because of the volume of fire.

Metro Transit said the Route 5 bus is still taking a slight detour around the fire, picking up and dropping off passengers on 10th Avenue South instead of Chicago Avenue.
