County officials to discuss wording on marriage applications
Minnesota's county recorders will hold their annual meeting June 11-14 and plan to discuss the best wording for marriage licenses and applications now that same-sex marriage is legal in the state.
The law allowing same-sex marriage said counties must drop gender-related terms like bride and groom but left the final language up to local officials.
Counties that began taking same-sex marriage license applications last week mostly substituted the word "applicant" for bride and groom. The recorders will discuss whether that's the best language or whether there are better options.
Ultimately, individual counties will decide for themselves what words to employ.
The state Legislature also mandated that any reference to "marriage" must be worded "civil marriage."
