Gas prices dip below national average

Gasoline prices are below the national average in Minnesota this holiday weekend.

A gallon of regular is $3.35 on average statewide, according to AAA. That's 13 cents below the national average and nearly a dollar below the all-time high that hit just before Memorial Day.

Refinery output and the price of crude oil have been stable, but demand from drivers and political instability in the Middle East could cause a slight hike in prices, said Gail Weinholzer of AAA Minnesota-Iowa.

"You may see a cent or two increase over the holiday weekend, but probably nothing more significant than that unless of course the situation in Egypt causes the markets to get nervous," Weinholzer said.

Gas prices peaked in the upper Midwest this spring when some of the refineries that serve the region shut down for maintenance, Weinholzer said.
