Two men charged in south Minneapolis homicide

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office has charged two men with three counts each of felony intentional murder in the second degree and two counts each of second-degree assault in connection with a fatal shooting in south Minneapolis Monday night.

According to criminal complaints filed in Hennepin County District Court, Diamond Griffin, 24, and Ryan Grant, 22, entered the back yard of a home near Powderhorn Park at about 11 pm. The complaint says they pointed a handgun and demanded cell phones and money from Francisco Benitez Hernandez, 38, and his brother and brother-in-law.

When the men said they did not have any money, either Griffin or Grant allegedly began shooting. Benitez Hernandez was fatally struck and his brother was injured. A third man was assaulted.

The complaints say witnesses' descriptions matched Grant and Griffin. In an interview with police, Grant implicated Griffin. Griffin wouldn't speak to officers.
