NDSU receives grants to analyze US-Dakota War sites
North Dakota State University has received nearly $90,000 from the National Park Service for GIS mapping and military terrain analysis at multiple U.S.-Dakota War battle sites across the state.
The Forum reports that $26,400 will help identify the boundaries of military actions in the 1863-64 U.S.-Dakota War. The grant will help develop a GIS map to locate all landscape defining features and fund a military terrain analysis for the fort and trail system to raise awareness of the importance and preservation of those battlefield sites.
The school received nearly $63,000 for a project to identify specific battlefield resources and boundaries for the July 1864 Battle of Killdeer Mountain. The battle pitted Brig. Gen. Alfred Sully's expedition against the Sioux during the U.S.-Dakota Wars.
