Meeting on St. Croix bridge construction delays tonight

Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation will meet Monday in Stillwater to answer questions about an upcoming bridge closing that's part of the $676 million St. Croix River bridge project.

The Beach Road bridge over Hwy 36 will close in early August and crews will have 150 days to build a new bridge. That project is expected to be complete by the end of 2013.

MnDOT Spokeswoman Jessica Wiens says drivers should pay extra attention and allow for extra time while traveling through the construction zone.

"We understand that these things inconvenience people for the short term, but the long-term benefit once the Beach Road bridge is complete, as well as all of the work on the Minnesota approach side, which will be done by the end of the 2014 season, will be worth the short-term pains," she said.

About 8,000 vehicles cross the Beach Road bridge every day.

Wiens says demolition of the old bridge and construction of a new one will cost about $2.5 million.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Oak Park Heights City Hall, 14168 Oak Park Blvd. N, in Stillwater.
