The Wisconsin toddler who died of hyperthermia in a car trunk last week may have died shortly after he was reported missing, authorities said.

Polk County Sheriff Pete Johnson said 2-year-old Isaiah Theis, of Centuria, Wis. likely died by 9 p.m. July 16, shortly after his family realized he was missing, according to the county medical examiner who is working on the case.

The toddler's disappearance sparked an extensive ground and air search last week. The boy was found in the trunk of a car left at his family's home for repair on one of the hottest days of the summer.

An autopsy found he'd died of hyperthermia, or excessive body temperature. Johnson also confirmed that the key for the vehicle was found inside the trunk with him.

Johnson said the incident remains under investigation.
