Gearing up for gay marriage in Jersey

UNDATED (AP) -- Some local New Jersey government offices will be open for business Saturday accepting marriage license applications from same-sex couples.

The state Supreme Court yesterday refused to delay a lower-court order for the state to recognize same-sex marriages starting Monday. Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who opposes the practice, says he's not happy but the state will comply.

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak says in a statement that the governor "firmly believes that this determination should be made by all the people of the state of New Jersey."

But he says the state Health Department will help towns carry out the ruling.

Same sex couples, meanwhile, have been scrambling to be among the first to tie the knot on Monday. A number of political figures say they'll participate in ceremonies.
