Woodbury water service still not restored for some

The city of Woodbury is still working to restore water to all its customers, after an equipment failure that started Saturday night.

A control system added too much pressure to the water system, triggering about eight water main leaks and causing hot water heater pressure relief valves to open up inside residents' homes, said Klayton Eckles, the city's public works director.

At least 50 residences and about half a dozen businesses were without water at some point, he added. In one multi-family building, some people had to be relocated.

"I wouldn't call it a glitch, but there is certainly something with the electronics system," Eckles said. "We have an electronic automatic control system. It has a backup system and an alarm system. And all those systems somehow failed in unison, so we didn't get any alarms and we didn't understand the nature of the problem."

The city hopes to fully restore service by Tuesday and is working to prevent a repeat of the failure, Eckles added.
