50 years ago, Singing Nun reached #1 with 'Dominique'

"Dominique" by the Singing Nun reached number one on the Billboard charts 50 years ago this week.

The Singing Nun was a name record executives came up with for Sister Luc Gabrielle, a nun at the Fichermont Monastery in Belgium. The songs that she wrote and performed were very popular with the girls who came to the monastery on retreats, so much so that the nuns asked a record company in Belgium to press a couple hundred albums to give away as gifts.

The songs found their way to America and this one, which eulogized the founder of the Dominican order, was released as a single. It was the Singing Nun's one and only hit record.
