The Senate has confirmed Andy Luger as Minnesota's next U.S. attorney.

Luger is an experienced litigator and is in private practice. He's a former federal prosecutor, and has been tapped to lead several independent investigations.

Among them, he reviewed how law enforcement treated protesters at the 2008 Republican National Convention. He also led an investigation that uncovered a series of problems with the Metro Gang Strike Force.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken recommended Luger for the post in July. He was confirmed Wednesday.

He says he's looking forward to working with the talented lawyers and staff at the U.S. attorney's office. He expects to join them in the next couple of days.

He succeeds B. Todd Jones, now director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
