Greyhound buses are coming back to St. Paul, after pulling out of the city for Minneapolis.

Greyhound closed its station on University Avenue near the Capitol in 2012. Company officials said they needed only one station in the Twin Cities.

But starting Tuesday, seven Greyhound buses a day will also stop at Union Depot, including two express buses that offer non-stop service to other cities.

Greyhound buses will share space with Jefferson Bus Lines, which also offers bus service to Union Depot.

Green Line light rail trains are scheduled to begin passenger service between the depot and downtown Minneapolis in June.

Union Depot officials say ridership has picked up in the Twin Cities, and travelers are attracted to the renovated depot. Greyhound will share ticketing and service facilities with Jefferson Lines at the depot.

"The bus companies are finding that the waiting room is just really nice for their passengers," said Deborah Carter McCoy, a spokeswoman for the Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority, which owns and operates Union Depot. "So it's something that they're encouraging their passengers to use, and we certainly are as well."
