DNR warns spring thaw could contaminate wells
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning people the spring thaw could contaminate their wells and drinking water.
DNR officials say flood waters and runoff contain bacteria and other contaminants. Wells located in pits, basements and low-lying areas are particularly susceptible.
Well owners should watch for signs of flooding and any change in their water's smell, color or taste. They also should conduct annual tests for bacteria and nitrates.
Well owners who suspect contamination should find an alternate water source, disinfect the well and sample the well before resuming consumption.
