St. Croix bridge work will slow Hwy. 36 this week

Drivers in Oak Park Heights will see traffic restrictions this week as construction work continues on the new St. Croix River bridge.

The span is scheduled to open in 2016, and will replace the aging Stillwater Lift Bridge.

Road crews will reduce Highway 36 to a single lane in each direction in Oak Park Heights, said Minnesota Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jessica Wiens.

She said the approaches to the new bridge are a major part of the project.

"There are about seven miles of approach work occurring in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. About four miles on Highway 36 and Highway 95 in Minnesota, and about three miles of building a brand new Highway 64 on the Wisconsin side," Wiens said.

The bridge is a joint project between the Minnesota and Wisconsin transportation departments.

Wiens said crews are also continuing work on the bridge's piers.
