Police ID man killed outside Minnesota ballroom

Law enforcement officials have identified the man killed in a Mankato shooting as Poth Acouth, a 22-year-old from Bellevue, Neb.

Authorities say Acouth was playing in a weekend basketball tournament held at Minnesota State University in Mankato.

Mankato police say Acouth died when someone opened fire outside the Kato Entertainment Center shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. Three other people were wounded.

Commander Deb McDermott of the Mankato Department of Public Safety said police believe there were many witnesses to the shooting.

[When] "officers arrived on scene, there was quite a bit of chaos and people running here and there," McDermott said. "We're just asking those people to come forward that have information that could help identify the shooter. Ultimately we're looking to seek justice for the victim and his family."

Most of those participating in the basketball tournament were involved with the Sudanese Student Association. Three people were arrested at the scene, but police have released them.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is helping Mankato police with the investigation.
