Two men charged in assault that injured 9-year-old girl

Hennepin County prosecutors have charged two Minneapolis men with first-degree assault on a 9-year-old girl following an incident Sunday in which one of the men used bricks to smash the windows of a car she was riding in.

According to charges filed in Hennepin County District Court this week, Myles Estes, 20, also fired multiple shots at the car, which had four children inside. The 9-year-old, who was hit by flying glass and may have suffered a glancing bullet wound to her head, may lose vision in one of her eyes, authorities said.

Prosecutors also charged Diontre Hill, 21, who called the car's driver and asked her to meet him in an alley near the 4200 block of Irving Avenue North in Minneapolis. After asking the woman if she had damaged a car belonging to a female acquaintance, Hill made a phone call and Estes arrived, according to a probable cause statement.

Estes then accused the driver of damaging the other car and began breaking her car's windows. When she drove away, he fired, smashing another window.

The woman told police she drove to the hospital after her daughter began bleeding from the head. Glass shards lodged in her eye, police said.

Police charged Estes with assaulting a juvenile while using a firearm. Hill is charged with assaulting a juvenile while he or an accomplice used a firearm.

Court records show Estes is on conditional release awaiting trial on another gun charge from last year.
