9 killed, dozens hurt in Chicago holiday shootings

The Fourth of July weekend was a bloody one in Chicago, where at least nine people were shot to death and at least 60 others were wounded.

Two of the dead were shot by police. Officers shot a total of five people over the long holiday weekend, a tally that Larry Merritt of the Independent Police Review Authority called "not normal."

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy is scheduled to talk about violence on Monday and release the latest figures of the number of illegal gun seizures in Chicago.

Last week, the police department announced there had been more shootings, but fewer homicides, in the city in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year.
