Oil pipeline protesters interrupt Dayton's water summit

Gov. Mark Dayton was interrupted by opponents of the proposed Sandpiper crude oil pipeline as he started his first Governor's Water Summit in St. Paul.

Just after Dayton took the podium Saturday, the protesters got on stage and held up banners saying, "Love water not oil."

One protester with a megaphone said tribal representatives should have been invited because the proposed pipeline would cross sensitive lands and waters that are important to Minnesota's Indian tribes.

Dayton said he would meet with the protesters after his speech and they left after a couple of minutes.

The 616-mile Sandpiper would carry North Dakota crude oil across northern Minnesota to Enbridge's terminal in Superior, Wisconsin.

About 800 Minnesotans are expected to gather for the water summit.
