What began Monday morning as a police response to a crash on Interstate 94 in northwestern Minnesota ended with a State Patrol trooper shooting and wounding a woman who then fled into a nearby field, authorities say.

The trooper involved was not injured and is on standard paid leave while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates, the state Department of Public Safety said.

The agency said the State Patrol had responded to a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near Minnesota Highway 336, east of Moorhead at about 10:30 a.m. The trooper found a vehicle had lost control, striking the median barrier.

The trooper "made contact" with two vehicle occupants, one man and one woman. "At some point during the encounter the trooper discharged their weapon, striking the female who then fled into a nearby field and was later located with a gunshot wound," the Public Safety Department said in a statement.

The man was taken into custody and the woman was taken to a hospital in Fargo, N.D., the agency said, adding that a firearm was recovered at the scene.

There was no immediate information on the condition of the wounded woman.

The BCA has taken over the investigation.

The incident shut down a stretch of of I-94 westbound from Downer, Minn. to Highway 336 near Dilworth, Minn.
