During this coronavirus pandemic, health care providers have been called on to do heroic duty for long hours, day after day and month after month. This hour you'll hear a documentary about the skill and compassion involved in being a nurse — even in the best of times.

Nurses have repeated exposure to the pain, crisis and suffering of their patients.

The documentary "Compassionate Nurses" examines the art of listening to patients and the challenge of avoiding "compassion fatigue" in a crucial health care profession. It features Dr. Mary Jo Kreitzer, RN, founder and director of the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.

The documentary was produced by David Freudberg for the Humankind series, in association with WGBH/Boston.
