St. Paul police are investigating a shooting Wednesday night that killed a man as he was leaving church in the city’s Summit-University neighborhood. 

Police said RayVell Carter, 41, of Roseville, was shot near the intersection of Fuller Avenue and St. Albans Street North around 8:45 p.m. as he was leaving a Bible study with a group of people that included his young daughter and father. Police said the victim ran from the area while his father drew a handgun and returned fire. The victim’s father has a valid permit to carry, according to police. 

Officers located the victim by following a trail of blood. Paramedics were unable to save the man and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police searched the area for anyone else who might have been struck by the gunfire, but did not find anyone. A suspect has not been located. 

The fatal shooting is St. Paul’s 20th homicide of the year.
