A Minneapolis man Monday pleaded guilty to a federal terrorism charge for trying to join the terror group ISIS. Last year, the FBI got a tip that Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan had been publicly supporting Al Shabab and later ISIS on social media. According to court documents, the 23-year-old praised attacks that were carried out by and inspired by ISIS, including the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans.
In December, Hassan twice tried to fly to Somalia. On his second attempt, customs agents at O'Hare Airport interviewed him and found text exchanges on his phone with an ISIS recruiter. Hassan returned to Minneapolis and was arrested in February. He faces 20 years in prison as part of his plea deal.
Renters at a south Minneapolis apartment complex have formed a tenants’ union as a new strategy to get building managers to catch up on repairs. A state law took effect this year adding protections for tenant unions. It bars landlords from trying to stop tenants from meeting and from retaliating against tenants who organize by raising their rent or stopping services.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation Monday held what it called a “statewide safety stand-down.” That’s after two road construction workers died last week. The stand-down included a pause on work on road construction projects across the state. MnDOT says it’s the first time it’s held such an event.

A state proclamation marks Tuesday as a Day of Remembrance for Survivors and Families Impacted by United States American Indian Boarding Schools. The proclamation recognizes the impact of boarding schools on Native communities across Minnesota, including the deaths of children and separation of Native families.
Minnesota had 23 American Indian boarding schools, 21 of which were directly funded or supported by state or federal resources.
For many in Native communities, the day is also known as Orange Shirt Day — many wear the color to raise awareness about the impacts of boarding schools.
