A year full of special legislative elections closes out with a pair of primaries Tuesday. Eight seats in Minnesota’s Legislature have been open for parts of 2025. Two primaries Tuesday will go a long way toward filling the remaining two vacancies.
In the Woodbury-Maplewood area, three DFLers are on the ballot. The winner is a virtual lock to fill the House seat because no Republican or candidate of any other party has filed. The late January general election will be a mere formality. The election is needed to replace a House member who won a Senate seat last month.
In St. Paul, there are six DFLers in the running to replace Mayor-elect Kaohly Her in the state House. Their primary winner will face a Republican, but Democrats have historically dominated in the district.
Should DFLers win both, the House will be back to a 67-67 party tie when the Legislature resumes in February.
