An immigration judge has ruled 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his family cannot stay in the country.

Judge John Burns ended their asylum case Wednesday and ordered their deportation. The family’s lawyers told MPR News they plan to appeal the decision.

Their case drew an international outcry in January when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took Liam and his father into custody in Columbia Heights and detained them in Texas. It came to represent the cases of other families seeking asylum in the United States.

For more context on these kinds of cases, Minnesota Now host spoke with Julia Decker, policy director of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota.
